In the mid 1990s, a WCTL "Senior Circuit" for players 50-and-over was launched by the late Lee Gunst, long one of the top doubles players in Westchester.
Originally a doubles-only league, with three matches constituting a team match, the number of teams and the number of matches has continued to grow over the years . . . first to four doubles matches constituting a team match and then, in the late 1990s, to three singles and four doubles matches constituting a team match. To this day, the third set in any match is "optional", to be decided before play began by a unanimous vote of players in that match, else a Super Senior first-to-10 Tie Break be the decider.
The Senior Circuit honored the memory of its founder by renaming its two divisions the Lee and the Gunst some 10 years ago. Senior Circuit play begins at the conclusion of the WCTL's regular season, with 7 teams in the Lee Division for 2008 and 8 teams in the Gunst Division.
